Hydroponic Vision: Local Gardener Goes Big with $5K Grant

Backyard gardener Jasnita Ali, 32, is set to expand her hydroponic farm into a commercial venture after securing a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) last week. The funding was awarded by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program during an event at the Hilton Fiji Resort in Denarau on Wednesday.

Ms. Ali plans to use the grant to enhance her business by purchasing additional materials and expanding her infrastructure. She aims to produce fresh, organic vegetables that are free from chemicals and pesticides, offering them to consumers at more affordable prices compared to current market rates.

Her business, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), is a small-scale hydroponic farm located in Chinakoti, Ba, which she launched in September 2022 from her backyard. Ms. Ali was inspired to pursue hydroponic farming due to the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases in the country.

“It is vital for customers to adopt a healthy eating style, which contributes to a better lifestyle,” she noted. NFFS implements the Dutch Bucket System along with the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponics system to cultivate crops on a quarter-acre of land.

“We employ innovative technologies, such as the automated dosing system from Bluelab, to optimize our operations,” she shared. The hydroponic system allows for the cultivation of various crops, ensuring a year-round supply of fresh and chemical-free vegetables.

Ms. Ali also emphasizes inclusivity in her business by employing individuals from underserved communities, including those with disabilities and unemployed youth. She faced challenges as a traditional farmer, particularly during floods and droughts. However, with the hydroponic system, she can grow a diverse range of vegetables without the constraints posed by climate variability.

GIST’s program provides intensive business training to empower young innovators and entrepreneurs in science and technology through practical guidance and mentorship from leading experts in the United States, in collaboration with local partners.
