Backyard gardener Jasnita Ali, 32, is set to expand her hydroponic farm to a commercial level following a US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) grant awarded to her last week. The grant was presented by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) programme at the Hilton Fiji Resort in Denarau on Wednesday.

Ms. Ali plans to use the funding to enhance her business by purchasing additional materials and expanding her infrastructure. Her goal is to provide fresh, organic vegetables that are free from chemicals and pesticides, offering them at prices lower than what consumers currently pay.

Her company, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), operates as a small-scale hydroponic farm located in Chinakoti, Ba. The business was established in September 2022, starting in her backyard.

Motivated by the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Fiji, Ms. Ali emphasizes the importance of healthy eating for improved lifestyles.

NFFS employs innovative farming methods, utilizing the Dutch Bucket System alongside the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) for hydroponics on a one-quarter acre plot of land. The farm also implements advanced technologies, such as an automated dosing system from Bluelab.

This hydroponic system enables year-round production of a variety of fresh, healthy, and chemical-free vegetables. Ms. Ali is committed to inclusivity in her business, providing employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth.

Reflecting on her journey as a traditional farmer, Ms. Ali noted the challenges she faced during flooding and drought, highlighting that the hydroponic system allows for diverse vegetable cultivation regardless of climatic changes.

The GIST programme offers intensive business training designed to empower young innovators and entrepreneurs in science and technology through hands-on training and mentorship from US experts, in collaboration with local partners.
