Hydroponic Dream: Local Gardener Takes Leap with $5,000 Grant

Jasnita Ali, a 32-year-old backyard gardener, is set to expand her hydroponic farm into a commercial venture after receiving a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) last week. The funding was awarded by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program during a ceremony at the Hilton Fiji Resort in Denarau.

Ms. Ali plans to utilize the grant to enhance her business, focusing on acquiring more materials and improving the infrastructure of her farm. “Our goal is to produce fresh, organic vegetables that are free from chemicals and pesticides, and sell them to consumers at a more affordable price,” she stated.

Her company, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), is a small-scale hydroponic operation situated in Chinakoti, Ba. Ms. Ali began her farming journey in September 2022 in her backyard. She was motivated to pursue hydroponic farming due to the high prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region.

“It is essential for customers to adopt a healthier diet, which can lead to an improved lifestyle,” she emphasized. NFFS employs the Dutch Bucket System along with the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponics system to cultivate crops on a quarter-acre of land.

The farm incorporates advanced technology, including an automated dosing system from Bluelab. “This method allows us to supply a variety of fresh, chemical-free vegetables year-round,” Ms. Ali noted. Additionally, she prioritizes inclusivity by hiring individuals with disabilities and members of the LGBTIQ community, as well as unemployed youths.

Ms. Ali also reflected on her experiences as a traditional farmer, sharing the challenges she faced with crop production due to flooding and drought. “With the hydroponic system, we can grow a diverse range of vegetables without being affected by climate changes,” she added.

The GIST Startup training program provides intensive business training for young innovators and entrepreneurs in science and technology, featuring hands-on learning and mentorship from top U.S. experts in collaboration with local partners.
