Jasnita Ali, a 32-year-old backyard gardener, is set to expand her hydroponic farm to a commercial level after receiving a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) last week. The grant was awarded to her by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) programme during a ceremony at the Hilton Fiji Resort in Denarau on Wednesday.

Ali plans to use the funds to enhance her business by purchasing more materials to expand her farm’s infrastructure. She intends to provide fresh, organic vegetables that are free from chemicals and pesticides, offering them to consumers at a lower price than currently available in the market.

Her company, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), is based in Chinakoti, Ba, and was established in September 2022. Ali ventured into hydroponic farming due to the rising concerns over non-communicable diseases (NCDs) prevalent in the country.

Ali emphasizes the importance of healthy eating for improving lifestyles. NFFS employs the Dutch Bucket System alongside the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) to cultivate crops on a quarter-acre plot. She incorporates innovative technologies like automated dosing systems from Bluelab to manage her farming operations.

By growing a diverse range of crops using hydroponics, Ali ensures a year-round supply of fresh, chemical-free vegetables. Additionally, her business promotes inclusivity by employing individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth.

Reflecting on her experiences as a traditional farmer, Ali mentions the challenges she faced during floods and droughts. With the implementation of the hydroponic system, she can grow various vegetables without being affected by climate fluctuations.

The GIST programme offers intensive business training aimed at empowering young innovators and entrepreneurs in the science and technology sectors through expert-led mentorship and practical training in partnership with local ecosystem partners.
