Jasnita Ali, a 32-year-old backyard gardener, is set to expand her hydroponic farm into a commercial operation following the receipt of a grant worth US$5,000 (approximately F$11,228.75) last week. The grant was awarded to Ms. Ali by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program at the Hilton Fiji Resort in Denarau on Wednesday.

“This funding will be used to enhance the business by purchasing additional materials to expand our infrastructure,” Ms. Ali explained.

Her goal is to grow fresh, organic, and pesticide-free vegetables that will be sold directly to consumers at more affordable rates than those currently available on the market.

Ms. Ali runs Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), a small-scale hydroponic farming business based in Chinakoti, Ba, which she launched in September 2022 from her backyard.

Her shift to hydroponic farming was motivated by concerns over the high incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region.

“It is essential for customers to adopt a healthier eating style, leading to improved lifestyles,” she noted.

NFFS employs the Dutch Bucket System along with the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponics system to grow crops on a quarter-acre of land.

“We utilize advanced technology such as the automated dosing system from Bluelab to manage our operations,” added Ms. Ali, who is also a mother.

The farm allows for the cultivation of various crops throughout the year, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh, healthy, and chemical-free vegetables.

Ms. Ali emphasized the importance of inclusivity in her business, highlighting her commitment to employing individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth.

Having experienced significant challenges as a traditional farmer during periods of flooding and drought, she views her hydroponic system as a reliable alternative.

“With the hydroponic setup, we can grow diverse vegetables without being adversely affected by climate changes.”

The GIST Startup training initiative provides intensive business training to empower young innovators and entrepreneurs in science and technology, featuring hands-on mentorship from leading US experts in collaboration with local ecosystem partners.
