Hunger Strike Sparks Investigation in Fiji Prison Drama

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced it is investigating the recent hunger strike by two inmates at the Naboro Maximum Correctional Facility. This investigation follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) issued on Saturday, which detailed the reasons behind the inmates’ protest over food supply management.

The inmates, who were working in the facility’s kitchen, were temporarily reassigned to allow for the internal investigation. In response to their dissatisfaction over this decision, they initiated a hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous positions.

On Monday evening, FCS confirmed that the hunger strike had concluded, and the medical team evaluated the inmates’ health. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is actively looking into the situation. The FHRADC also reassured that the inmates are receiving medical support and that the Commission will continue to monitor their condition.
