The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating a case involving two inmates at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility who recently staged a hunger strike. The protest was prompted by a disagreement regarding the management of food supplies. The inmates had been assigned to the facility’s kitchen but were temporarily removed from their duties to facilitate an internal investigation.
In response to their dissatisfaction with this decision, the inmates initiated a hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated in their previous positions. The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) confirmed on Monday that the hunger strike concluded that evening, after which medical assessments were conducted on the inmates’ health.
FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is looking into the situation. The FHRADC also reiterated that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and that the Commission will continue to monitor developments related to the case.
