Hunger Strike Sparks Controversy in Fiji Corrections Service

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is currently keeping a close watch on two inmates who began a hunger strike on Friday. In a statement issued yesterday, the FCS indicated that they are reaching out to spiritual leaders from various denominations to offer additional support to the inmates.

The statement noted that the individuals involved were previously tasked with responsibilities in the facility’s kitchen. Following a dispute related to food supply management, an internal investigation was conducted, leading to their temporary reassignment from kitchen duties. The inmates expressed their discontent with this decision and are demanding to be reinstated, persisting in their hunger strike despite multiple counseling sessions with senior officers, healthcare professionals, and other support staff.

The FCS insists that the health and well-being of these inmates are their highest priority. Medical personnel are closely monitoring the inmates, and all necessary measures are being taken to protect their health during this period.

The FCS has updated the Minister for Justice and the Human Rights Commission about the situation regarding the hunger strike. FCS Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa revealed that the inmates had informed their families of their plans to initiate the hunger strike.

Mr. Nakarawa explained that news of the hunger strike had already spread on social media due to family discussions before he was officially notified. He acknowledged that such actions are not uncommon within the corrections system.

He further mentioned that the inmates have started altering their demands during the hunger strike. Initially protesting their removal from kitchen duties, they have since expressed a desire to meet with him and the Attorney-General. Mr. Nakarawa advised the officers to ensure the inmates’ well-being and emphasized that their requests could only be addressed once they end their hunger strike, as acting under duress is not feasible.
