Hunger Strike Behind Bars: Fijian Inmates Seek Justice

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has initiated an investigation into two inmates who participated in a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) released on Saturday, detailing the circumstances that led to the protest.

The inmates, who were assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen, expressed their dissatisfaction over a disagreement related to food supplies, which prompted their hunger strike beginning last Friday. They demanded to be reinstated to their previous roles after being temporarily removed to facilitate an internal investigation.

FCS confirmed that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with a medical team assessing the health status of the inmates involved. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is actively looking into the situation. The FHRADC also confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and will continue to monitor the ongoing circumstances.
