The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has announced that it is investigating the case of two inmates who recently staged a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction facility. This confirmation came after the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) issued a statement explaining the reasons behind the protest.
The inmates, who were assigned to the facility’s kitchen, began their hunger strike last Friday in response to a disagreement regarding the management of food supplies. They had been temporarily removed from their positions to facilitate an internal investigation into the matter.
In a follow-up statement, FCS reported that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with the facility’s medical team evaluating the health condition of the inmates involved. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma confirmed that a team from the Commission is actively looking into the incident. Additionally, FHRADC noted that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and that they will continue to monitor the situation closely.
