Humility Over Ego at University of Fiji Graduation

Higher education plays a crucial role in shaping not only knowledge but also character, according to Professor Shaista Shameem, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Fiji. During her speech at the graduation ceremony held at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka, she praised the accomplishments of 308 graduates, emphasizing the importance of humility over ego in their future endeavors.

Among the graduates, 39 distinguished students were honored with gold medals for their exceptional academic performance. Prof. Shameem expressed her joy and nostalgia as she witnessed the graduates, dressed in celebratory attire, prepared to receive their hard-earned certificates alongside their proud families.

Reflecting on their journeys, she noted the challenges faced by students, particularly those who were older and balancing work and family responsibilities. Prof. Shameem emphasized the significance of adapting to a new environment and forming lasting friendships while navigating the complexities of university life.

She highlighted the unique educational experience offered by the University of Fiji, despite its limited resources. The university fosters a reflective, holistic approach to learning across various disciplines, including Humanities and Arts, Sciences, Technology, Law, Medicine, and Business and Economics. According to her, the essence of the University of Fiji’s success lies not simply in what is taught, but in how it is taught.

As she concluded her address, Prof. Shameem encouraged the graduates to recognize that privilege is something to be earned and should not solely hinge on academic qualifications. This message serves as a reminder that true success is built on integrity, hard work, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
