Human Rights Advocate Honored: A Step Towards Social Justice

The Lautoka-based law firm Iqbal Khan and Associates has achieved a significant milestone in human rights advocacy following the recognition of Sabrina Iqbal Khan, who was awarded the Human Rights Medal 2025. This accolade was presented by the Minister for Multiculturalism of New South Wales, Steven Kamper, during the Premier’s Harmony Dinner at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, Australia.

Mr. Kamper highlighted the event as a platform to commend individuals who contribute immensely to the community, emphasizing that their work fortifies a sense of belonging and inclusion within New South Wales. “These efforts, both individual and collective, strengthen our shared sense of belonging,” he said.

Sabrina Iqbal Khan was honored for her formidable commitment to human rights advocacy. She expressed that the prestigious award symbolizes her dedication to social justice and her drive to empower marginalized communities while promoting cross-cultural dialogue. Ms. Khan has developed a unique dialogue theory, presenting her ideas at various events in Hunter Valley and Sydney, aimed at bridging cultural divides.

Her advocacy extends to her recent book that features interviews with women from Iran, Afghanistan, and Palestine residing in New South Wales, allowing their stories and experiences to shine through. Moreover, Ms. Khan’s commitment to combating domestic violence is showcased in her film, which has garnered significant recognition, receiving 23 international accolades within three months of its release. This film has profoundly impacted discussions around domestic violence, leading to the establishment of a day in the United States dedicated to honoring survivors.

In light of the accolades and ongoing initiatives, Australia and Fiji exhibit a broader commitment to tackling gender-based violence and fostering inclusivity, inspired by the momentum of events like the Premier’s Harmony Dinner and the initiatives surrounding International Women’s Day.

This aspirational trajectory toward social justice continues to gain traction, reflecting a hopeful future where collaboration and advocacy change lives and create a more equitable society for all. As communities unite to address critical issues surrounding human rights and gender equality, the collaborative efforts signify a powerful movement towards a brighter, more inclusive future for marginalized populations.
