Peni Mada, a dedicated flower seller at the Suva Municipal Market, has been supporting his family for over 30 years through this trade. At 49 years old, Mada, a father of eight, learned the art of selling flowers from his mother, who now enjoys her senior years at home.
Mada takes pride in being the sole provider for his household, stating, “In my family, no one else is working, I am the only one who sells at the market.” He firmly believes that his role, as a man in this profession, has never limited him in fulfilling his responsibilities. He values the honesty of his work, which provides for his family’s necessities and contributes to his children’s education.
Most of the flowers he sells are cultivated in Nakelo, and he transports them to Suva by bus to reach his customers. Mada emphasizes that the flower business is best suited for those who are hard-working and committed. He sees his flower arrangements as a source of joy for his customers and calls on unemployed individuals to consider using their land for flower farming as a reliable means of generating income.
Mada’s story not only highlights the virtues of hard work and commitment in sustaining one’s family but also serves as an inspiration for those looking to turn their circumstances around. Embracing opportunities within the agricultural sector can lead to fulfilling livelihoods, showcasing that with effort and dedication, individuals can create a stable future for themselves and their families.
