A rural poultry farm in Volivoli, Rakiraki, has significantly expanded its operations thanks to a $30,000 investment from the Government under the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management’s Rural Outer Island Development Programme. Rani’s Poultry Farm, owned by Ranjani Devi and her husband, has grown from a small-scale venture that began in 2012 with just a few layer birds and roadside egg sales into a vibrant rural business.
Over the years, through diligent saving and reinvestment, the Devis have transformed their backyard operation into a sustainable enterprise. The farm’s expansion was officially celebrated by Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mosese Bulitavu, who was joined by commissioners from the Central, Eastern, and Western Divisions for the occasion.
Thanks to the recent support, Rani’s Poultry Farm now boasts two poultry sheds, a storage facility, and is home to over 2,300 layer birds. The farm supplies fresh eggs to the Volivoli Island Resort, the Rakiraki Market, and various nearby retail outlets, enhancing local food supply and economy.
Ms. Devi expressed that this government assistance has significantly boosted their production and income while encouraging other rural families to remain committed to their aspirations. This project exemplifies the Government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing rural livelihoods, fostering self-reliance, and combating poverty within these communities. The success story of Rani’s Poultry Farm serves as an inspiring model for rural development initiatives and the potential for sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
