Members of the union representing workers at Ba and Lautoka hospitals, which are managed by Aspen Medical, have recently conducted a secret ballot regarding potential industrial action. John Paul, the national secretary of the Construction, Energy, Timber, Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), revealed that a log of claims was submitted to Aspen Medical earlier this year, detailing requests for improved working conditions and salary increases.
Paul noted that the vote did not include nurses and doctors, emphasizing that there are 200 union members involved from the two facilities. Over the years, he claimed there have been delays in salary payments, and ultimately, workers joined the union in response to the decline in their working conditions, seeking enhancements.
The current secret ballot aims to express the frustrations of union members and to prompt Aspen Medical to address their grievances. Paul highlighted the necessity for negotiations to settle the claims made on behalf of the workers.
In response, a spokesperson from Health Care Fiji (HCF) affirmed their commitment to maintaining open communication with CETWUF and providing competitive terms and conditions to employees.
