Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has voiced his concerns regarding the hospitalization of seven individuals from the Warwick Resort Fiji, a well-known destination on the Coral Coast, following a troubling incident last weekend. He assured that the government is handling the situation to the best of its ability and confirmed that authorities have collected samples for testing.
In response to the incident, the Warwick Resort described the occurrence of guests falling ill as “unprecedented.” The resort management expressed deep concern over recent media reports and emphasized their commitment to the safety of their guests, highlighting their nearly four-decade presence in Fiji’s tourism sector. They are actively collaborating with local authorities to investigate and determine the cause of the illnesses, reaffirming their dedication to maintaining high standards of food and beverage safety.
The resort has assured visitors that their health and safety remain a top priority, inviting anyone with concerns or specific questions to contact management for assistance. Meanwhile, updates from the police, Ministry of Tourism, and Ministry of Health regarding the investigation’s progress are still awaited.
As of now, Australia’s travel advisory website continues to recommend standard safety precautions for travelers to Fiji, cautioning against potential risks related to drink spiking and methanol poisoning. A toxicology report from the Fiji Police Force is anticipated to be released later this week, providing further clarity.
Fortunately, five of the seven affected individuals have been discharged from medical care, while two remain hospitalized. One patient has shown improvement and was transitioned from the ICU to a standard ward for ongoing observation.
This situation underscores the importance of swift and effective responses to health incidents in tourism, and it is hopeful to see that many individuals have recovered and are receiving appropriate care. The Warwick Resort’s proactive stance in addressing the situation and prioritizing guest safety is commendable, and ongoing investigations will hopefully contribute to enhanced safety practices in the hospitality industry.
