Newcastle Red Bulls have made a significant move for the upcoming season by signing star No.8 Hoskins Sotutu on a three-year contract. The 27-year-old New Zealand international, widely regarded as one of Super Rugby’s most formidable back-rowers, is anticipated to bring immediate impact to the Gallagher Premiership.

Sotutu, who has been capped 14 times by the All Blacks, is known for his experience, size, and scoring ability, positioning him as a vital asset for the Red Bulls as they strive for excellence in both domestic and European competitions. During his tenure with the Blues, he amassed 31 tries over 80 Super Rugby matches, with his prowess notably shining through in 2024 when he played a pivotal role in leading the Auckland-based team to the Super Rugby title, earning the MVP award in the process.

At 1.92 meters tall and weighing 112 kilograms, Sotutu is celebrated for his athleticism, strong ball-carrying skills, and talent for offloading under pressure—qualities that have made him highly sought after by clubs in the market.

Neil McIlroy, the sporting general manager of Newcastle Red Bulls, emphasized the importance of Sotutu’s signing, stating, “This is a huge signing that brings major firepower into the club and sends a message around the league. Hoskins was in demand from other teams, but he has seen what is being planned at Newcastle Red Bulls and wants to be part of it. He’s an X-factor player who will get people off their seats and shows we really mean business.”

Sotutu expressed his enthusiasm for joining Newcastle, highlighting the club’s ambitious vision as a pivotal factor in his decision. “I am excited to be committing to Newcastle Red Bulls’ project and competing in the Gallagher Premiership week in, week out. The club made it clear how ambitious they are, and I’m looking forward to getting started. I’ve enjoyed my time at the Blues and want to finish on a high before hitting the ground running in the North East,” he remarked.

With the confirmation of Sotutu’s arrival, Newcastle Red Bulls have set a clear intention to strengthen their squad as they embark on a new chapter, underpinned by one of the sport’s elite No.8s. This signing not only enhances the team’s competitive edge but also serves as a testament to their commitment to a bright future in rugby.
