Hope Rises as Search Intensifies for Two Missing Fishermen Off Lautoka near Vio Island

The family of Imraz Zain Iqbal and seven-year-old Arshad Irfan Khan Junior are holding onto hope as search efforts intensify for the two individuals who went missing during a fishing trip near Vio Island in Lautoka on Sunday. Tragically, the body of Arshad’s grandfather, Basant Singh, was recovered on Monday, and the remains of a teenager, Junaid Shah, were discovered the following day.

According to Abdul Ashif Hakh, the sole survivor of the incident, their boat capsized due to sudden adverse weather conditions shortly after they set sail. The group had embarked on their fishing journey from Saweni Beach but faced turbulence as the day progressed. Mr. Hakh described the chaotic moments as they attempted to escape the capsizing vessel, managing to throw a life jacket to young Arshad just before they became separated in the water.

Arshad’s father expressed his anguish, sharing that his son, who usually avoided water due to fear, insisted on joining the trip that day. “He was my only child, and he was a smart boy,” Mr. Khan lamented.

The police have been actively conducting search operations in the waters off Covuli Reef, enlisting local water patrol teams and community members to aid in the effort. As the search continues, the families of the missing are drawing strength from one another in this distressing time. Junaid’s mother, Shenaz Shazia Khan, reflected on her last conversation with her son, revealing her own fears as their communication ceased by nightfall.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding safety on the water, especially as the region approaches cyclone season. Authorities have urged the community to be vigilant and have reminded families of the importance of safety precautions during marine activities.

While this situation is undeniably somber, the persistent efforts of search teams and the unwavering hope expressed by the families illustrate the resilience of the community. The dedication shown by local officials and family members offers a glimmer of possibility for the future, and many are praying for the safe return of those still unaccounted for.
