The Suva City Council, in partnership with City Impact Church, has opened a new shelter aimed at helping street dwellers gain access to essential services, including safe sleeping arrangements and bathing facilities. This initiative was launched in response to the rising number of homeless individuals in Suva.
In addition to the shelter, the Council has introduced the “City Impact Car Wash,” a community service designed to provide employment opportunities to displaced individuals. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the Chief Executive Officer of the Suva City Council, emphasized that this program aims to restore dignity and support those living on the streets in their journey toward self-sufficiency. He underscored the importance of not just providing immediate relief but also fostering an environment that enables individuals to sustain themselves in the long run.
Boseiwaqa has engaged directly with the homeless community to identify their needs and aspirations, revealing a desire for entrepreneurial skills training. This collaborative effort will also include support from the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives and MSMEs, which will assist individuals in becoming business-oriented and financially independent.
The initiative aligns with existing legal requirements of the Council, particularly Section 85 of its by-laws, which mandates addressing the needs of marginalized communities and ensuring adequate shelters are available. Currently, the Ministry of Women and Social Protection is conducting a profiling exercise of street dwellers in Suva. This assessment aims to gather information that will inform future support programs tailored to individual circumstances.
The Suva City Council’s approach reflects a broader commitment to finding sustainable solutions for street dwellers, building on ongoing discussions regarding homelessness, which have highlighted the systemic challenges these individuals face. There is a growing recognition that community collaboration, alongside government support, can lead to meaningful change, providing hope for a better future for those affected by homelessness.
These efforts echo similar initiatives discussed earlier in the year, addressing the unique challenges posed by homelessness in urban areas. With continued investment and community support, there is optimism that such programs can transform lives and promote a more inclusive society for all Fijians.
