Residents of the Vuniqari community, near Labasa, have traditionally relied on a well for their water supply, as the area lacks standard metered water services. This practice has been ingrained in their way of life for generations, with each household navigating the difficulties that come with inconsistent water access.

Local resident Amrit Lal described how using the well is integral to their daily lives, allowing them to manage despite ongoing difficulties. He mentioned, “We drink from the well. A motor is being installed to assist with drawing water,” emphasizing a crucial vulnerability, as power outages could render the motor inoperative. Additionally, he raised concerns about water quality during rainy periods when the well water often becomes muddy.

Rohit Prakash, another community member, confirmed the obstacles in obtaining clean water, noting that residents have devised alternative solutions. The Water Authority of Fiji occasionally provides water delivery by cart, especially during dry spells, creating a necessary backup for the community.

This situation aligns with broader issues reported in nearby areas like Yalava and Tamavua, where residents also struggle with water shortages and quality concerns, despite receiving substantial rainfall. Families in Yalava, for example, often depend on untreated water sources, raising health concerns, while Tamavua faces regular supply disruptions, as highlighted by the Water Authority of Fiji.

However, there is a glimmer of hope, as recent government commitments towards infrastructure improvements signal that enhancements could soon be on the horizon. Community resilience is evident, and with ongoing advocacy and attention from local authorities, there is optimism that better access to clean water will lead to improved health outcomes and quality of life for residents.

In conclusion, while the Vuniqari community confronts notable challenges regarding clean water access, there is optimism for future improvements, underscoring the significance of infrastructure development and community advocacy in meeting essential needs.
