The Government of Fiji is progressing with the Nabavatu relocation project, aiming to provide 37 new homes funded by a $5.9 million allocation from the Relocation of Communities Trust Fund. Climate Change Minister Mosese Bulitavu announced that preparations for the site and plot pegging have already commenced.

Initially, the government’s role will be to oversee the construction of these homes, while future phases will be managed by a different organization, the details of which are yet to be revealed. Disaster management permanent secretary Isoa Talemaibua emphasized the importance of this project, especially considering that 84 families had to live in tents following the significant damage inflicted by Tropical Cyclone Ana.

Minister Bulitavu stated that the funding will go to the Ministry of Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, which will manage the project. This initiative is integral to addressing the needs of the Nabavatu community, who have shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.

Past reports highlight that since Cyclone Ana in early 2021, affected families have endured harsh living conditions in temporary shelters. The community’s determination and hope for improved living standards remain strong as they look forward to the completion of their new homes.

This initiative not only reflects the government’s dedication to disaster recovery efforts but also showcases the solidarity and strength within the Nabavatu community. The ongoing support and progress in the project offer a hopeful outlook for families eagerly anticipating safe, permanent housing.
