Lautoka Aspen Hospital’s pediatrician, Dr. Savenaca Seduadua, reported that the oncology department diagnoses approximately 20 to 30 cases of childhood cancer each year. During a recent cancer awareness session organized by WOWs Kids Fiji and the Health Ministry, Dr. Seduadua outlined the prevalent types of cancer found in children, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia, brain tumors, and lymphomas. Other forms of cancer also seen at the hospital include Wilms tumor, retinoblastoma, and neuroblastoma.

Despite the rarity of childhood cancer relative to adult cancer, Dr. Seduadua confirmed that there are currently three active leukemia cases in Lautoka. He emphasized that while treatment options such as chemotherapy and surgery are available for certain types of cancers, radiation therapy is not offered locally. Treatment typically spans two years, providing challenges to patients and their families.

These insights come in the context of ongoing improvements in pediatric cancer care in Fiji, particularly since the establishment of the Twinning Program, which has strengthened cooperation between local medical professionals and specialists from Christchurch, New Zealand. This initiative has significantly increased the capacity for childhood cancer treatment in Fiji, allowing around 70 to 80 percent of children requiring care to receive treatment locally.

In addition to medical advancements, raising awareness about early detection of childhood cancer remains critical. Organizations like WOWs Kids Fiji are actively educating parents about recognizing the early warning signs of cancer, emphasizing the importance of prompt medical evaluation when symptoms persist.

The collaborative efforts between the healthcare sector and community organizations provide a hopeful perspective for the future of childhood cancer care in Fiji. By fostering awareness and ensuring more families are educated about the signs and treatment options, there is potential for improved outcomes for children battling cancer.
