In the context of a challenging environment that many youths in Fiji face, the sport of Australian Rules Football (AFL) serves as a beacon of hope and a platform for positive change. Loata Vakausausa, the manager of the AFL Fiji Talent Academy, highlights this transformative potential, as she guides young players navigating through their tumultuous surroundings.
The AFL has become more than just a sport for these youths; it’s an avenue for escape from the violence and peer pressures that may otherwise hinder their development. Following the recent trials for the AFL Fiji under-17 national team, Vakausausa reflected on their training sessions, which have successfully instilled discipline and purpose in many boys who previously faced behavioral challenges. “A lot of the boys were known to be a bit wild or came with behavior challenges, but through training and guidance, we’ve been able to shape them,” she noted.
Recently, the selection process for the Fiji Junior Tribe and Fiji Junior Vonu teams was completed, which will participate in the upcoming 2025 Pacific Cup in Cairns, Australia. The squads are filled with talented individuals representing the next generation of AFL athletes in Fiji, where interest in the sport is steadily growing.
Vakausausa articulated the academy’s mission: “It’s become a place where they feel supported. They’re not just training; they’re dreaming of playing professionally.” Many players train not only to excel in sport but to create a brighter future for themselves. She encourages every child to pursue their aspirations, adding, “If it’s your dream, go for it. There are always scouts watching these games.”
Reflecting on the broader impact of sports in Fiji, the development of AFL not only aims to build athletic skills but also fosters personal growth and community spirit among young athletes. The camaraderie and support found within the academy demonstrate that with dedication and teamwork, positive outcomes are achievable.
As these young athletes prepare for the Pacific Cup, there remains a hopeful outlook for the future of AFL in Fiji, signaling that sport can indeed alleviate the challenges faced by the nation’s youth and guide them toward a path of success and fulfillment.
