In Fiji and the Pacific, congenital heart disease remains a major health concern for children, primarily due to structural defects they are born with. Dr. Krupali Tappoo, medical director at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevni Children’s Hospital, highlights that the most prevalent conditions treated at the facility include patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), atrial septal defects (ASD), and ventricular septal defects (VSD). She noted these conditions often necessitate surgical intervention, with operations ranging from straightforward procedures like clipping and tying off connections in PDA to more complex surgeries that can last up to eight hours.

Dr. Tappoo further explains that congenital heart disease can stem from genetic, environmental, or maternal health factors during pregnancy. A maternal diet deficient in key nutrients like iron and folic acid, alongside conditions such as diabetes, significantly raises the risk. Additionally, smoking and certain infections during pregnancy are contributing factors. Emphasizing the importance of antenatal care and public awareness, Dr. Tappoo advocates for community support in providing expectant mothers with proper nutrition and healthcare.

The Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevni Children’s Hospital has been instrumental in providing free surgeries and healthcare services to children across Fiji and neighboring Pacific nations. With over 30,000 echocardiograms and more than 363 completed surgeries, the hospital offers hope and significant healthcare improvements in the region. Collaborative initiatives like these not only address immediate medical needs but also aim to empower local healthcare systems through training and international partnerships.

Despite the challenges, the ongoing efforts by the hospital underline a commitment to support affected families and improve pediatric cardiac care. With continued focus on health education, early detection, and comprehensive surgical interventions, there is optimism that congenital heart disease outcomes can steadily improve, offering a healthier future for children across the Pacific.
