Forty-seven residents living at the Public Rental Board Housing in Narere have received offer letters as part of a rent-to-own initiative. Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa presented these letters, emphasizing that the recipients can obtain ownership titles once they satisfy the payment conditions.
Nalumisa indicated that the properties are being sold at prices significantly lower than the market rate, providing a valuable opportunity for residents to transition from renting to owning their homes. He also expressed hopes that this positive initiative could expand to other PRB estates in the future, enhancing accessibility to housing for many more families.
One of the recipients, Roshni Deo, a widow and resident for 35 years, described the offer as timely and expressed excitement about finally securing a stable and permanent home. This initiative aligns with the broader National Housing Policy aimed at giving Fijians a chance at formal housing.
The government’s commitment to enhancing living conditions through such initiatives is reflected in a history of similar efforts. Past actions included substantial funding allocations to assist low-income families and improve housing conditions, which have shown promise in fostering community stability.
By offering these rent-to-own opportunities, the government is not only helping individual families but also aiming to strengthen communities by encouraging homeownership, which typically leads to greater civic engagement and improved neighborhood conditions. These steps signal a hopeful outlook for families seeking stability and a better quality of life in Fiji.
