Seven individuals from the Western Disabled People’s Association have recently received new prosthetic limbs at the Hope Centre in Nadi, marking a significant improvement in their quality of life. This initiative is part of the centre’s ongoing commitment to assist amputees, supported by funding from the Australian government. Over the past three years, the Hope Centre has developed a reputation for providing essential assistance to those in need of prosthetics.

According to the chairman of the Hope Centre, Sanjit Patel, Fiji faces a growing challenge with diabetes, which has led to an increasing number of amputations. He emphasized the need for facilities like the Hope Centre, which play a critical role in helping individuals who suffer limb loss regain their mobility and independence. Each prosthetic limb created at the centre is custom-made for the individual, with careful measurements taken to ensure a proper fit. The cost of each prosthetic is around $500, and importantly, all funds go directly towards the creation of prosthetics rather than operational profits.

Patel highlighted the dire diabetes statistics in Fiji, noting that the country has one of the highest rates of this condition globally, leading to a concerning number of amputations. “Our goal is to help amputees not feel confined to their homes but to give them renewed hope and a chance to re-engage with their lives,” he stated.

In an effort to reach more individuals in need, the Western Disabled People’s Association is encouraging potential beneficiaries of below-the-knee prosthetics to reach out for assistance.

This development not only represents a significant step in addressing the challenges faced by amputees in Fiji but also highlights broader issues related to diabetes management and the need for accessible healthcare services in the region. Facilities like the Hope Centre and the efforts of organizations such as the Western Disabled People’s Association reflect a concerted effort to improve the lives of individuals facing disabilities and to foster a more inclusive community.

It is important to continue raising awareness about healthcare challenges, as well as the need for supportive services that enable individuals with disabilities to thrive.
