Since its founding in 2014, WOWS Kids Fiji has emerged as an essential support network for children combatting cancer in the nation. The organization, recognized as a charitable entity, currently provides critical care and support to over 70 children throughout Fiji, empowering families during one of their most challenging times.
Mere Lutuciri-Williams, operational manager of WOWS Kids Fiji, elaborated on their vital services, emphasizing their reach across the Central, Western, Northern, and Maritime divisions of Fiji. The organization has adapted and expanded its offerings to cater to the diverse needs of pediatric cancer patients, including assistance for those undergoing active chemotherapy, those in palliative care, and survivors in remission—some of whom are five years post-diagnosis.
Integral to their operations is a solid partnership with healthcare professionals at Colonial War Memorial Hospital and Aspen Medical in Lautoka. This collaboration enables timely notifications of new diagnoses, allowing WOWS Kids to promptly step in with support. Lutuciri-Williams highlighted that funding is sourced from a combination of corporate donations, government grants, and community contributions, which have proven crucial in sustaining their operations.
One significant challenge the organization faces is transportation, especially in transporting children from remote areas to hospitals for treatment and follow-ups. Lutuciri-Williams noted that covering the cost of medications not available at hospital facilities also alleviates pressures on families burdened by medical expenses.
Building on previous community engagement, such as fundraising events like the Christmas Gala that raised $28,000 and collaborative initiatives with the Fiji Football Association, WOWS Kids Fiji continues to foster a sense of collective strength and positivity among families facing these dire circumstances. The organization not only provides necessary medical assistance but also creates moments of joy and community connection, as demonstrated in its family fun days.
