The Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Nasese has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to pediatric cardiac care, successfully completing its nineteenth round of surgical missions from February 11 to February 18, 2025. This initiative provided a lifeline to numerous children facing congenital heart disease, as all procedures are conducted entirely free of charge.

Leading this compassionate mission was Professor Laszlo Kiraly, a distinguished pediatric cardiac surgeon affiliated with the National University Hospital in Singapore. He was joined by a dedicated team of 22 medical professionals, including specialists from Australia and a cardiologist from the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital in Palwal, India.

This surgical mission continues to highlight the hospital’s impressive track record, with over 351 free heart surgeries performed since its inception. The hospital is particularly noted for extending services to children not just in Fiji, but also from neighboring Pacific islands, emphasizing its role as a crucial healthcare facility in the region.

Dr. Krupali Tappoo, the hospital’s director, expressed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration with Professor Kiraly and his team, which has significantly impacted families in the Pacific. This partnership not only provides immediate medical intervention but also enhances local medical capacity through training programs for local doctors, combining theoretical and practical learning for better pediatric cardiac care management.

The focus on early detection and intervention for congenital heart defects remains a priority. Past initiatives, including extensive screening outreach programs conducted in remote areas, promote awareness and facilitate timely interventions, which are critical for improving health outcomes for young patients.

The ongoing support and dedication of international medical professionals underscore the power of collaborative healthcare initiatives. This progress provides families facing heart disease with hope for a brighter future, a testament to the resilience and compassion that drive this vital work in the Pacific region.

This article paints a hopeful picture of the future of pediatric cardiac care in Fiji and beyond, showcasing that medical experts dedicated to their craft can transform lives, providing children with not just surgeries, but renewed opportunities for health and happiness.
