The Salvation Army Lautoka Family Care Centre has officially reopened, promising significant support for women and children facing crises. Centre manager Lt. Salome Lawe Matakaruru emphasizes the center’s upgraded facilities, which have been enhanced to better accommodate victims of gender-based violence, human trafficking, and homelessness.

The reopening ceremony, officiated by Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran, highlighted the centre’s role in offering essential services such as counseling, advocacy, upskilling training, and reintegration support for its residents. With the centre now better equipped, it can accommodate up to 20 residents, providing a safe haven for women and children escaping domestic violence and other precarious situations.

Minister Kiran urged the community to engage actively in addressing the high rates of family violence in Fiji, particularly in the Western Division, where alarming statistics reveal that a significant proportion of women and children suffer from abuse. She reassured those seeking assistance that they are not alone and that there is a community that stands ready to support them.

In the wake of this reopening, the government is dedicated to collaborating with various organizations, including the Fiji Police Force, to enhance support systems for vulnerable populations. This collaborative approach reflects a broader commitment to tackling issues of violence and fostering safe environments throughout Fiji.

As the centre resumes its critical functions, it embodies hope and resilience for many who have endured hardship, making strides toward creating a society where women and children can feel secure and valued. The ongoing commitment from government and community partners illustrates a hopeful future where collective efforts lead to transformative change, helping to build a safer Fiji for all.
