Hope and Healing: The New Sanctuary for Female Cancer Survivors in Fiji

The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, dedicated to supporting women cancer survivors, officially opened its doors yesterday in Nabua. This marks an important step forward in providing essential support for those who have battled cancer.

Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of the new facility. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” she stated. “They can come to rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space where they can discuss their experiences and the challenges they encounter.”

Established in 2021, the nonprofit organization aims to assist women cancer survivors in their spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery. “Twice a year, we take a different group of survivors to a hotel to help build relationships and trust. Afterward, we conduct a three-week Bible study program focused on spiritual, emotional, and inner healing, as well as the transformation of humanity,” Ms. Vavataga explained.

Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso from Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who officiated the opening ceremony, commended the initiative. “Thank you for establishing this hub so that individuals can find a safe haven, a refuge, and a place where they can connect with others who care,” he said.

Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspiring story during the event. “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” she recounted. Her testimony underscored the vital need for support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m truly grateful for this organization because after cancer treatment, the experience can be quite isolating,” she noted.

Ms. Vavataga also shared the organization’s aspirations of eventually opening a hospice, indicating that this is just the beginning of their efforts. The Self Care Retreat Fiji relies heavily on donations and partnerships to sustain its initiatives. “For this building, I even had to shave my hair to raise funds,” she revealed, referencing her involvement in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
