In an inspiring story from the Solomon Islands, Sinariko Maezama embarked on a journey to Fiji with her daughter, Alihi Tore, in search of much-needed medical help. Their trip took a positive turn upon reaching the Sai Prema Foundation’s Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Suva, where they were met with warmth and kindness from the hospital staff.

Sinariko expressed her initial anxieties, saying, “I was so nervous at first. There were so many questions running through my mind about what would happen to my daughter.” However, the compassionate care they received made them feel at home during their stay in Fiji.

Alihi’s surgery coincided with a monumental occasion for the hospital, as it marked its 20th surgical mission. An esteemed international team led by Dr. Shaun Setty, a pediatric heart surgeon from Stanford University, successfully performed 15 heart surgeries for children from Fiji and neighboring islands, including the Solomon Islands and Kiribati.

Reflecting on their fortunate situation, Sinariko highlighted the stark contrast in available medical care for children back home, stating, “A lot of children back home don’t have the same opportunity my daughter has had.” This sentiment echoes the struggles many families face in accessing vital health services.

Since its opening in 2022, the Sai Prema Foundation’s hospital has made significant strides, completing 378 free surgeries, providing over 30,000 echocardiograms, and conducting more than 40,000 medical consultations—at no cost to the families. Dr. Setty praised the facility, noting the quality of care rivals that of top hospitals globally.

The hospital’s enduring partnership with the Fijian Ministry of Health ensures continued outreach to remote communities, making healthcare accessible to children regardless of their geographical or financial situations. As Sinariko and Alihi prepare to return home, their journey stands as a testament to the intersection of compassion and high-quality healthcare, embodying hope for countless families in need.

This narrative of recovery and compassion emphasizes the ongoing efforts to transform pediatric cardiac care in the Pacific, reinforcing the belief that with continued dedication and support, the future holds promising possibilities for children facing health challenges.
