A new initiative is underway to assist communities in Fiji that are facing the threat of climate-related relocation without alternative land to move to. This project, developed in collaboration with the iTaukei Affairs Board and Bread for the World, aims to restore agency to these communities, facilitating their ability to make informed choices about their future.

Vani Catanasiga, the Executive Director of the Fiji Council of Social Services, noted that while some villages still have Mataqali land available for relocation, others do not. The project seeks to address this disparity by exploring various practices across provinces and working to formalize options for communities caught in uncertainty due to the lack of available land. Catanasiga emphasized that many communities remain vulnerable because they lack safe places to relocate.

This initiative, much like the ongoing Nabavatu relocation project, underscores the importance of comprehensive planning and community involvement to respect local rights and land customs. The Nabavatu project has highlighted the challenges faced by communities post-disaster, especially following Tropical Cyclone Ana, where many families were displaced and are currently living in temporary conditions. As construction progresses on the new relocation sites, there’s growing hope for families in Nabavatu and other affected areas, showcasing resilience in the face of climate challenges.

Overall, this latest effort demonstrates a commitment to partnership and strategic planning to enhance the living conditions and rights of communities at risk, signifying a vital step towards sustainable development and societal resilience amid an evolving climate landscape.

Such projects not only aim to provide immediate solutions but also emphasize the collaborative spirit involving local communities, governmental agencies, and international partners, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose as they build a more secure future.
