Hope Amidst Tents: The Resilience of Nabavatu Village Families

In the tranquil village of Nabavatu, nestled by the Dreketi River, residents have endured significant hardships following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021. Displaced from their homes, the 38 families have been living in makeshift tents ever since, facing harsh weather conditions and a lack of basic needs.

The once-bustling agricultural and fishing community has experienced a stark transformation, turning their peaceful living situation into a continuous struggle. As conditions in the tents have worsened over the years, residents have been exposed to various health issues, particularly among the elderly and vulnerable individuals.

Despite numerous promises of relocation, families remain hopeful for a much-needed change. They are eagerly awaiting the government’s intentions of moving them to a newly commissioned site where plans for constructing 37 permanent homes are underway.

A sense of unity has emerged from these dire circumstances as the villagers have come together to support one another.
