Russia and Ukraine have successfully carried out a prisoner swap, exchanging 205 soldiers from each side in a deal facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, as announced by both nations on Tuesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared the news via the Telegram app, expressing gratitude towards the UAE for their mediation efforts.
In her remarks, Russia’s human rights ombudsman, Tatiana Moskalkova, highlighted the emotional impact of the exchange, stating, “For many families, today has become a celebration of reunification – anxiety and uncertainty have given way to the joy of a loved one returning home.”
According to Ukraine’s prisoners of war affairs organization, the released individuals include 202 enlisted personnel and three officers drawn from multiple military branches and the national guard. This marked the fifth swap of prisoners this year and the 64th of the entire conflict, which has now extended over 38 months.
The latest negotiation reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts amid the broader conflict, including recent discussions involving international mediators. Notably, Zelensky’s recent interactions with leaders in the Middle East emphasize a growing role for countries seeking to play a constructive part in resolving tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
