As Fiji commemorates the 146th anniversary of Girmit, a poignant reflection comes from Ram Bahadur Singh, an 88-year-old descendant of Indian indentured laborers, who recalls the immense hardships faced by his family during their arrival in Fiji. Living in Naveria, Savusavu, Singh reminisces about the traumatic experience aboard the ship, recounting moments of unbearable heat and personal loss when he lost his father during the journey.
Singh shares, “There was too much sun on the boat, we didn’t know what to do. When my father died, we were all alone. They told us we came from a good country, but life here was full of pain.” The impact of these experiences resonates deeply with him, as health struggles and unemployment continue to shadow his life today.
The 2025 Girmit Day celebrations, set to take place from May 10th to 12th in Labasa, will adopt the theme “Preserving the Past and Envisioning the Future.” This theme reflects both the recognition of the sacrifices made by the Girmityas and the hope for a unified community moving forward. As preparations ramp up for the event, it is expected to offer a space for cultural performances and emotional reconnections with the past.
Similar narratives have been shared by other descendants, such as Shiu Kumari and Kamla Wati, who recount their ancestors’ struggles and sacrifices in the face of adversity, highlighting the resilience woven into Fiji’s rich cultural tapestry. These stories emphasize the importance of remembering and celebrating their lineage, as well as fostering a spirit of unity among Fiji’s diverse communities.
The Girmit Day celebrations signify a renewed commitment to honoring the past while looking to the future. With government backing, including a budget of $200,000, these observances stand as a testament to cultural pride and inclusivity, promising an uplifting experience for all participants as they reflect on their shared heritage. Such events nurture hope for a harmonious society that embraces the collective memories of its people, paving a brighter path ahead for all Fijians.
