Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, a key figure in Fiji’s history, was honored during a recent Ratu Sukuna Day celebration held at Subrail Park in Labasa. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka addressed government officials, diplomats, and the public, underscoring the importance of nurturing future leaders by instilling values learned from past leaders. He highlighted that Ratu Sukuna’s journey from a small town to Oxford University exemplified the idea that ambition should not be limited by geographical or social circumstances.

Rabuka emphasized, “As custodians of our traditions, religion, and governance, it is our responsibility to guide our children to serve, lead with humility, and act with compassion.” Ratu Sukuna’s legacy, as pointed out by Rabuka, reflects the significance of education, discipline, and respect in building a strong Fiji. Sukuna’s role in establishing critical institutions such as the Fijian Administration and the Native Lands Trust Board has created a lasting impact, inspiring current and future generations to lead with integrity.

The four-day celebration culminated in a march through Labasa Town, attended by locals from across Vanua Levu, embodying a spirit of unity and hope among the Fijian people. Similar events have echoed these themes, reinforcing the need for community engagement and a commitment to cultural heritage.

Moreover, other community leaders, including the Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, and Special Administrator Paul Jaduram, reiterated Sukuna’s life as a testament to resilience and effective governance, uniting diverse communities in Fiji. The emphasis on education reiterates the collective belief that fostering leaders who value service and dedication is essential for the nation’s development.

With ongoing celebrations and discussions centered around Ratu Sukuna’s influential life, there is a hopeful outlook for Fiji, encouraging its youth to uphold the values he championed. Such events serve not only to honor a past leader but also to inspire contemporary citizens to actively participate in shaping a bright future for their communities.
