Approximately 150 senior descendants of the girmitya in Fiji’s Northern Division are set to be honored this weekend for their invaluable contributions to the nation. Multi Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh, who chairs the Girmit Committee, emphasized the government’s recognition of the dedication and hard work of these descendants, particularly those aged 85 and above.

Mr. Singh expressed pride in their ancestors and highlighted their sacrifices, stating, “They struggled to allow us to have a better future. We salute them for their sacrifices.” Among the honorees is Jamiran Bi, the oldest descendant at 108 years old, who was born in 1917 in Basoga, Labasa.

The three-day celebration will kick off with a variety of events, including a schools oratory contest, a float procession, and a replica of the ship Leonidas, which transported the first indentured laborers from India. The festivities, starting on Saturday at Subrail Park in Labasa, will be broadcasted live on FBC and the Government website, engaging a broader audience in the acknowledgment of this significant historical event.

This year’s Girmit Commemoration continues a rich tradition of honoring the past while fostering unity among Fiji’s diverse communities. The government’s commitment to cultural preservation, evidenced by the $200,000 budget for the event, underscores the importance of these celebrations not only as a homage to historical struggles but as a way to inspire future collaboration and shared identity among all citizens. Through storytelling, remembrance, and celebration, the Girmit Day events symbolize hope for a united future rich in cultural heritage.

The emphasis on recognizing the contributions of the Girmityas reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and understanding within Fiji’s multicultural society, a sentiment echoed in related celebrations aimed at fostering community bonds across different ethnic groups.
