Labasa Special Administrator Paul Jaduram has praised the late Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna for his vital role in establishing the foundation of modern Fiji. During the Ratu Sukuna India Night program, Jaduram articulated that Ratu Sukuna’s dedication impacted iTaukei communities significantly, particularly through the introduction of the iTaukei Land Trust Board, which enabled these communities to secure ownership of their lands.
Jaduram acknowledged Ratu Sukuna’s forward-thinking approach, particularly his advocacy for Girmit descendants, allowing them to lease lands for income generation. He remarked, “He was instrumental in establishing the TLTB, an institution that safeguards indigenous Fijians’ land and identity,” emphasizing its importance in the effective management of native lands for the benefit of all Fijians.
The significance of Ratu Sukuna’s legacy was echoed by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, who described it as a powerful vision for the welfare of both indigenous and other ethnic communities. Additionally, the ongoing Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations, honoring his contributions, reflect a broader acknowledgment of his impact on Fiji’s identity and progress.
The public holiday is marked by events culminating today at Subrail Park, Labasa, where Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is set to officiate the closing ceremonies following a march through town this morning. As the celebrations take place, they not only honor a historical leader but also inspire current and future generations to uphold values of leadership, service, and community unity that Ratu Sukuna exemplified.
A sense of hope pervades this year’s festivities, embodying the spirit of collaboration and emphasizing the significance of education and cultural heritage as foundational elements for the nation’s future growth.
