The capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara, is gearing up to host the much-anticipated Oceania Rugby 7s this December, reinforcing its emerging reputation as a top destination for high-caliber sporting events.
Building on the success of the recent 2023 Pacific Games and various regional tournaments, Honiara is solidifying its status as a vibrant hub for sports, culture, and tourism within the Pacific region. This significant accomplishment is the result of teamwork between the Solomon Islands Government, the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation, Tourism Solomons, Solomon Host, and local partners, along with support from Oceania Rugby.
Oceania Rugby is partnering closely with Tourism Solomons and Solomon Host to showcase the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Solomon Islands. Richard Sapias, President of Oceania Rugby, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the tournament in Honiara, emphasizing its potential as a premier sporting destination following the impressive outcomes of previous regional events.
Dagnal Dereveke, acting CEO of Tourism Solomons, highlighted the landmark nature of the Oceania Rugby 7s, which will attract a global audience and presents a significant opportunity to further establish the Solomon Islands as a leader in sports tourism. He noted the evident economic benefits for the tourism sector as attendees are likely to explore the islands after the event.
Miss Solomon Islands, Ms. Polosovai, who will participate in the Oceania Rugby 7s programs, shared her insights on the event’s impact: “The Oceania Rugby 7s is more than just a tournament; it is an opportunity to showcase the Solomon Islands’ offerings, from our stunning landscapes to our rich traditions.”
The event is set to feature top-quality rugby and will bring together teams from across the region, while also serving as a platform to promote the Solomon Islands’ unique tourism assets. The archipelago, comprising over 900 islands in the Pacific, boasts breathtaking natural landscapes, cultural diversity with over 70 languages, and is ideal for hosting major international events.
As Honiara prepares to warmly welcome players, fans, and visitors, it is establishing itself as the go-to destination for unforgettable sports and cultural experiences in the Pacific.
This event could significantly boost both the local economy and tourism, promoting a positive outlook for the Solomon Islands’ future as a prime location for international sporting events.
