Lote’s Homestay, located in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has emerged as a successful venture, attracting numerous visitors during the festive season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, a former hotel employee, reported that over 100 guests visited the homestay in December of the previous year, including staff from various government agencies and NGOs.
The establishment was initiated following Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, with the first guests being staff from Save the Children Fiji, who stayed for three months to conduct post-cyclone assessments. Radrodro, who previously served as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva, recognized the potential of the homestay as a pathway to financial security and entrepreneurship.
The homestay, which was developed from his family home, now offers 17 guest accommodations across three houses, with room rates set at $100 per person per night, inclusive of breakfast and dinner. Radrodro credits his family’s support, particularly his wife, as a crucial element of his journey.
The homestay has garnered positive reviews as the only accommodation provider in Nabouwalu, conveniently situated near the Nabouwalu Jetty. Radrodro noted that ferry passengers occasionally stay with them during delays.
In 2023, Radrodro expanded his business to include a vehicle rental service, managing a fleet of 13 vehicles, including a minibus that operates along the Nabouwalu-Labasa corridor. He noted that his initial success with the homestay provided the foundation for the rental service.
Looking ahead, Radrodro plans significant expansion of the homestay to accommodate rising demand. This initiative includes the construction of a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant, with estimated costs nearing $1 million, which is expected to create 15 local jobs. He has also leased beachfront land from local landowners to offer guests a choice between a homestay or a boutique beachfront hotel experience.
