Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua has emerged as a successful enterprise, drawing in hundreds of guests during the holiday season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, with a background in the hotel industry, disclosed that over 100 visitors stayed at the homestay last December, which included personnel from various Government agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

Radrodro established the homestay following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, with his initial guests being staff members from Save the Children Fiji who were in the area for post-cyclone assessments. “Save the Children Fiji stayed with us for three months,” he noted. This venture has proven to be a significant step towards financial independence for the 38-year-old entrepreneur, who previously served as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva.

The family home has been converted to accommodate 17 guests distributed across three cottages, with room rates set at $100 per person per night, which includes both breakfast and dinner. Radrodro credited much of his success to the unwavering support of his family, particularly his wife.

Customer satisfaction has been high as Lote’s Homestay is the only accommodation option in Nabouwalu, conveniently situated near the Nabouwalu Jetty. “Ferry passengers sometimes stay with us to rest during delays,” he shared.

Building upon his success, Radrodro ventured into vehicle rental services in 2023, managing a fleet of 13 vehicles, including a minibus that serves the Nabouwalu-Labasa route. “My homestay business helped me start the rental business,” he mentioned.

Looking ahead, Radrodro has ambitious plans for the homestay, including the addition of a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant. This expansion, projected to cost nearly $1 million, will generate employment for 15 individuals. He has secured beachfront land from the Mataqali (landowners) to develop extra lodging options, providing visitors with both a homestay and a boutique beachfront hotel experience.

With a vision grounded in optimism, Radrodro’s aspirations for growth and innovation continue to flourish in Nabouwalu.

Summary: Lote’s Homestay in Nabouwalu, established by Alipate Radrodro after Cyclone Yasa, has become a popular accommodation choice, attracting various guests. Radrodro has expanded his business to include vehicle rentals and plans significant renovations to enhance guest experiences. His story exemplifies resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, fueling hope for future sustainable growth in the region.
