This Christmas is set to be particularly meaningful for Selai Biu, a 70-year-old woman who is returning to her village in Lakeba, Lau, to celebrate with her family, especially her brother. It has been three decades since she last visited her home.
Ms. Biu’s excitement is heightened by the recent completion of her family home, which was devastated by the tsunami that followed the volcanic eruption in Tonga in 2022. After two years of hard work and investment to rebuild, she is looking forward to witnessing the transformation of her residence.
Accompanied by her brother, Selai is one of the many family members lined up at Port Mua-i-Walu to board the MV Lomaiviti Princess XII last Thursday. “I’m excited to see what has become of the home. I’m taking a few things to help start decorating it,” she expressed, highlighting her anticipation for the festive celebrations.
Selai’s family currently resides in Waibau, Naitasiri, where she lives with her husband and four children. They will spend Christmas and the New Year in Lakeba before returning home.
This reunion not only symbolizes a return to her roots but also showcases resilience in the face of adversity, bringing hope and joy to a once-devastated community. Celebrating the festive season in a rebuilt home will surely add to the warmth and spirit of the holidays.
In summary, Selai Biu’s return to Lakeba promises to be a heartfelt reunion filled with love and celebration, illustrating the power of family and resilience.
