The Fijian Drua men’s squad is experiencing a heartwarming homecoming in Kadavu, a moment that has deeply resonated with its four local players: Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and Vuate Karawalevu. Currently, they are participating in a pre-season camp at Namalata, where they had their first training session at the Namalata Central School grounds, following a traditional welcome ceremony.
Kuruvoli, who is 25 years old and hails from Nabouwalu, expressed the significance of this trip, emphasizing the opportunity to reconnect with his roots and family. He noted that it’s a rare occasion for players from the western part of Fiji to visit and bond with the local communities and young aspiring athletes.
Karawalevu, also from Dravuwalu, echoed Kuruvoli’s feelings. He expressed his gratitude for holding the pre-season training in Kadavu, which provides a refreshing experience for players visiting the island for the first time. Baselala, who comes from Solotavui in Nakasaleka, added that returning to his homeland brings a special meaning, allowing the team to bond and showcase the beauty of their island.
The squad’s training activities included a vigorous boat race exercise at Namalata Bay, which garnered attention from the local villagers who turned out to watch and support them. Head coach Glen Jackson remarked on the benefits of this unique experience, highlighting the perfect weather and traditional kava ceremony that contribute to team bonding and cultural appreciation.
As the team prepares to depart Kadavu, they take home fond memories of their training and the warm connections made within their home community. This positive experience not only strengthens the team’s unity but also nurtures ties with the local islanders and young players.
Overall, this heartfelt reunion underscores the profound connection between sports, culture, and community, providing an inspiring story of teamwork and shared heritage. The emphasis on nurturing local talent and showcasing the beauty of Kadavu speaks volumes about the spirit of the Fijian Drua squad and their commitment to giving back.
