After capturing attention at various international film festivals, Neeraj Ghaywan’s drama “Homebound” is gearing up for its global cinematic release. Producer Karan Johar announced on September 13, 2025, that the film will hit theaters worldwide on September 26, 2025, paving the way for its streaming debut on Netflix at a later date.
“Homebound” premiered in May 2025 at the esteemed Cannes Film Festival within the celebrated Un Certain Regard section. The film further captivated audiences with a warmly received North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) earlier this month, where it garnered a standing ovation.
Written and directed by Ghaywan, and produced by a team that includes Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra under Dharma Productions, the film is an adaptation of a 2020 New York Times article by Basharat Peer. It stars Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa, portraying the story of two childhood friends navigating the stresses of preparing for India’s national police exam.
The project’s ambition is further underscored by the involvement of Hollywood icon Martin Scorsese, who joined earlier this year as an executive producer. Scorsese has expressed admiration for Ghaywan’s previous work and has actively contributed to the film’s development and editing, offering invaluable mentorship.
