Home Burns on New Year’s Day: Was It Arson?

In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2025, a tragic fire broke out, marking the Northern Division’s first incident of the year. A four-bedroom residence in Waiqele, Labasa was completely consumed by flames, leaving homeowners Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad devastated as they celebrated the holidays in New Zealand with family.

The couple learned of the fire from a relative, with Ms. Devi mentioning that their caretaker was away for the holiday period when the fire started around 3 am. “We are deeply grateful to our neighbor, who immediately contacted the National Fire Authority (NFA),” she expressed.

Despite facing challenges due to limited resources, firefighters bravely battled the blaze. Mr. Prasad noted the struggle of the fire crew, stating, “With only one water tank and a damaged hose, they did their best.” The fire caused severe damage, destroying two cars and partially affecting two vans. The couple suspects foul play, recalling previous troubling incidents, including threats and an attempted break-in at their shop near the Waiqele Airport.

“We are hopeful that the authorities will act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice,” said Ms. Devi. The estimated damages are around $250,000, but the family remains hopeful. “We have lodged a police complaint and trust the authorities will uncover the truth and prevent such tragedies from affecting others,” she added.

Puamau Sowane, CEO of NFA, expressed sympathy for the affected family, highlighting that the lack of fire hydrants and water sources in the area posed significant challenges for firefighters. He emphasized the need for residents in remote areas to be especially vigilant given the distance from fire stations.

Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident. “We are awaiting the NFA report to determine our next course of action,” he stated, noting that this was the first fire reported in the North for 2025.

As the investigation unfolds, there is a community call to ensure safety and prevention efforts are heightened, hoping for a swift resolution and justice for the affected family.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community preparedness and vigilance, especially in areas lacking ready fire protection resources. The family’s optimism and determination to seek justice underscore a resilient spirit that can spur positive change in their community.
