In the past 72 hours, a significant number of 934 traffic violations were recorded, largely attributed to the Christmas shopping rush. According to Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu, minor infractions emerged as the most common issues, with 440 individuals cited for minor offenses and 311 for speeding.
Assistant Commissioner Driu emphasized the serious implications of speeding, noting it remains a primary contributing factor in accidents. He urged all drivers to adhere to speed limits to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Other notable violations included 58 instances of careless driving, 51 cases each for failing to produce a driver’s license and seatbelt non-compliance, along with 10 drivers penalized for carrying too many passengers. Additionally, 8 drivers were cited for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 faced charges for operating a vehicle with an expired license.
A concerning statistic was the 23 drivers arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol. In response to these challenges, ACP Driu stressed the importance of awareness campaigns and the necessity for drivers to have proper documentation readily available.
Looking ahead, traffic officers will sustain their vigilance on the roads, especially as more travelers are expected. ACP Driu encouraged everyone to plan their trips wisely, ensuring adequate rest and mindful consumption of alcohol before driving. Checkpoints will remain active, designed for public safety and awareness.
This focus on road safety, especially during high-traffic periods like the holiday season, highlights the ongoing efforts to reduce traffic incidents and prioritize the well-being of the community. It is a reminder to all drivers to approach the roads with care and responsibility, fostering a safer environment for everyone.
