Vilise Daunimasi decided to prioritize the safety of his children over Christmas festivities as he and his family sought refuge at Korovuto College in Nadi on Tuesday. The 32-year-old security guard was among the few evacuees at the college after their home near the Nadi River was inundated due to rising waters from heavy rainfall.
Typically familiar with flooding during downpours, Mr. Daunimasi expressed that the severity of the flood on that day caught them off guard. “It is always flooded when there is heavy rain. Sometimes it is dangerous and we are always ready for that kind of situation,” he stated. However, he did not expect such a significant flood on Christmas day itself.
On Christmas morning, the family began packing essentials like food and clothing in preparation for evacuation. They contacted the police for assistance, with the vulnerable members of his family—women and children—being transported to safety first. Mr. Daunimasi described the difficult moment when floodwaters rose to waist-height, and despite it being a day of celebration, their primary concern was survival. “We are thankful that no lives have been taken away, especially our children,” he reflected.
This situation highlights the resiliency and prioritization of family safety over holiday routines, showcasing the strength individuals can exhibit in times of unforeseen crisis. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community and support systems during challenging times. While the circumstances were unfortunate, the commitment to protect one’s loved ones will hopefully inspire others facing similar situations.
This story not only raises awareness about the impact of natural disasters but also showcases community support in adversity. In the face of challenges, there remains hope, gratitude, and the unwavering determination to safeguard loved ones.
