As the festive season continues, the National Fire Authority (NFA) has issued a strong reminder about fire safety in light of a recent house fire that resulted in significant loss. The fire, which occurred early last Saturday morning in Navutu, Lautoka, completely destroyed a four-bedroom home, leaving six individuals displaced and causing an estimated $200,000 in damages. The affected property belonged to a 58-year-old pastor associated with the Cross Over Ministry.
Joel Israel, the acting CEO of NFA, emphasized the importance of community vigilance during this time. “As we are well into the festive season, we urge the public to take preventative measures to minimize fire risks,” he stated in an official communication. The NFA is particularly concerned about the increased likelihood of fires during the holidays, as people often spend long hours at church services and celebrations, returning home exhausted.
In light of these circumstances, Israel has called on household heads to ensure their homes are fire-safe before retiring for the night. This includes placing mosquito coils on non-flammable surfaces, keeping them away from curtains and flammable materials, and securely storing hazardous substances. Additionally, he encouraged residents to unplug lights and electrical appliances when not in use, noting that these simple steps can greatly reduce fire hazards.
Moreover, the NFA stresses the importance of having a fire escape plan and educating children about fire safety—skills that could prove crucial in emergency situations. This proactive approach can help ensure families are prepared and minimize risks during this festive season.
With these preventative measures, the community can enjoy the festivities with greater peace of mind, ensuring that home celebrations remain joyful and safe.
