Holi was joyously celebrated across Fiji today, uniting various mandali groups and individuals in a vibrant display of colors and community spirit. This festival, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil, highlights Fiji’s rich multicultural heritage and strengthens communal bonds.
Participants like Mul Chand, 61, reflected on how the celebration of Holi has evolved over the years. He noted that while the essence remains the same, modern life’s pace often limits extensive celebrations. “Day by day, everything has changed. So, before it was a long time to celebrate. And now, people doing their job, they can’t get the time,” he said, emphasizing adaptability while honoring tradition.
Young voices were also prominent in the celebrations. Akansha Chand, at just 23 years old, expressed Holi as a metaphor for new beginnings. “In Holi, we should celebrate with colors. And give the good in bad. Carrying the bad with you throughout your life will just be a burden,” she stated, embodying the festival’s underlying message of positivity and renewal.
This year’s festivities included a special FMF Mirchi FM and Radio Fiji Two Non-Stop Holi Masti event held at the Damodar City Centre. This inclusive gathering encouraged participation from all ethnic backgrounds, reinforcing the festival’s values of acceptance and togetherness. The event not only offered entertainment but also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of forgiveness and unity in fostering community cohesion.
Minister Charan Jeath Singh has previously highlighted Holi as an opportunity for unity, urging citizens to commit to virtuous actions that strengthen community ties. Additionally, Dhirendra Nand, the National President of the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, emphasized the need to spread messages of positivity, particularly for those facing difficulties.
Such communal celebrations exemplify the spirit of Holi, encouraging harmony and collaboration among all Fijians. As diverse communities come together, the resilience of Fiji’s cultural tapestry is reinforced, fostering lasting relationships and empowering individuals to embrace their shared humanity. The festival serves as a beacon of hope, reminding everyone of the beauty found in unity amidst diversity.
