Holi in Fiji: A Vibrant Celebration of Unity and Tradition

Various mandali groups and individuals throughout Fiji embraced the vibrant spirit of Holi today, bringing together people of all ages in a joyous celebration filled with colorful splashes. The festival, which symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, reflects the rich multicultural heritage of Fiji and reinforces community bonds.

Mul Chand, a 61-year-old participant, expressed that while the essence of Holi remains consistent, the ways in which it is celebrated have evolved over the years. “Day by day, everything has changed. So, before it was a long time to celebrate. And now, people doing their job, they can’t get the time. So, we just celebrate whatever we know that we do,” he shared.

Echoing this sentiment, 23-year-old Akansha Chand highlighted Holi as a time for new beginnings. “In Holi, we should celebrate with colors. And give the good in bad. Carrying the bad with you throughout your life, it will just be a burden throughout your life. So, we should be the good in the bad,” she remarked.

The significance of Holi extends beyond mere festivities; it is deeply embedded in tradition, connecting families, friends, and communities. Celebrations this year also featured the FMF Mirchi FM and Radio Fiji Two Non-Stop Holi Masti event at the Damodar City Centre, an inclusive gathering encouraging participation from all ethnic backgrounds. This event promises not just entertainment but also a heartfelt reminder of the values of forgiveness and acceptance, which are essential for community cohesion.

Minister Charan Jeath Singh has previously underscored Holi’s role in promoting unity, urging citizens to engage in virtuous action within their communities. Dhirendra Nand, the National President of the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, has also emphasized the importance of painting messages of positivity, particularly for those facing challenges.

As communities come together, the spirit of Holi fosters cooperation and harmony among all Fijians, serving as a beacon of hope. Through unity and active participation in cultural events like Holi, the resilience and beauty of Fiji’s diverse tapestry can continue to thrive, empowering individuals to embrace their shared humanity and foster lasting relationships across different cultures.
